Meme: "Dear Fandom" Letters
Okay,
stunt_muppet did this meme and I thought it looked rather fun... That meme where you write to fandoms as if they were significant others and see if people can guess what they are. Do I even have ten fandoms? Huh.
If nothing else, it should be pretty impressively cracky and fun to write. Here goes!
#1: My best friend, and my oldest. We've never really gone out together (although... there was that one time messing around that we kind of don't talk about) but that's because we don't want to ruin what we have. Our relationship is awesome just the way it is. Besides, even though you haven't introduced me to your friends, the coolest people I know always turn out to know you anyway. We haven't talked much in a while, but next chance we get, let's have a slumber party and catch up. I'll bring the pizza!
#2: We flirted around for a while, but never really got anywhere. Partly because you were a rebound from my sister and she didn't think much of your friends; partly because there are some things I really don't like about you, as well as some things I love. I still think about you occasionally when I realize one of my friends is seeing you, but on the whole, I'm okay with just hearing stuff secondhand from them. We've both moved on now. Still and all, thanks for the memories!
#3: You're still my "homeboy" and always will be, but you're so hard to really get to know. All sorts of strange people follow you around, and you're just too easygoing to brush them off, so I don't hang out with you much... but when we steal a few minutes alone together, I always wind up saying "we should do this more often". And we should.
#4: I know, I know. You said you were too old for me; I just didn't believe you. And for a while, we worked. You in my head, me in yours... we were a great team, and I still owe you for everything you did for me, but I wanted more than you were willing to give me. Eventually, we had to break up. We still talked, for a while - maybe it's time to pick up the phone and see if you're still the good friend I remember.
#5: Talk about your basic love/hate relationship! We seem like a match made in heaven, but we're just too similar to get along, especially since I have to be the best there is at what I do and you named what I do. We're always competing. But when my friends take you out on the floor for a spin, I love to watch you dance.
#6: You and #5 are like Siamese twins - everybody who knows him knows you, and vice versa. He introduced me to you, and we've had some amazing threesomes, but you're the one I come home to. Every time I want to geek out about something, you're right there with me; you have limitless energy, a great sense of humor, and I know you'll always be ready to go when I drop in, no matter how long I've been off playing with somebody else.
#7: You came into my life when I was pretty thoroughly lost; you took my hand, walked with me to the end of the tunnel, and showed me how to open my eyes again to the light. We're in a long-distance relationship now, and I thought for a while that I might have moved on... but no, I'm still crazy in love with you. I can't wait to see you again, just as soon as I've got the money for the plane ticket. (I wish you'd move back here...)
#8: We've been having a lot of fun together lately, and as usual in a new relationship, I'd like to think it'll last forever. But if I'm honest, I don't know how long this'll last - you "swing both ways" pretty heavily, as they say, and most of your friends are on the side of the field where I don't play. Which is a shame, because they really know how to party... I kind of wish I could join in, but I know I don't really want to, and eventually that dichotomy may stress me right out of seeing you any more.
#9: You're a very quiet person - I couldn't even remember your name the first few times we met. I thought you'd be one of those friends I can't really talk about with anyone. Turns out, though, you know everyone! You're still quiet and unassuming, but when we step out together, the whole world watches, and baby, I love it! (Doesn't hurt that you're gorgeous as heck, either... ♥)
#10: Now that I'm not quite so hot and heavy with #8, I'm looking to new horizons. I don't even know who you are yet, my next fandom, #10, but whoever you turn out to be, I know it'll be a heck of a ride!
Whoa. That was fun. Very metaphorical. And I got to say some things I've never quite known how to say any other way - which is cool.

#1 - Lord of the Rings (unless it's #7)
#2 - no idea
#3 - Doctor Who
#4 - Star Trek
#5 - MacGyver
#6 - Stargate
#7 - Lord of the Rings (unless it's #1)
#8 - Man from Uncle
#9 - Sapphire and Steel

#1 - yup, Lord of the Rings.
#2 - Star Trek: TOS, actually. I like Bones, but I can't stand Kirk, and I haven't bothered to see the reboot yet.
#3 - Captain America. I didn't expect anybody to get that one, because I've never published in the fandom, but I'm actually a huge Cap fangirl... big canon-fixing AU epic halfway planned, that kind of thing.
#4 - X-Men. I've literally memorized my favorite years of the comic (1981-1983), but the fandom's just too convoluted for me to get into.
#5 - MacGyver
#6 - Stargate SG-1
#7 - Doctor Who, of all things. Third Doctor serials on Netflix got me through a rather bad bout of depression a while back, but I can't afford the subscription any longer (the "plane ticket" reference), and my library won't do interlibrary loans of DVDs.
#8 - Man from UNCLE
#9 - Sapphire & Steel
