Fandom meme

Okay - [livejournal.com profile] togsos was doing this meme and I (being - like her - a "sleek fabulous lemming", lol) jumped on the bandwagon.

Rules: Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Togsos asked me about Sapphire and Steel, MFU, and Doctor Who, then added "but I would like a bonus set of the same answers on Star Trek next gen because it is a slide into fandom that is happening/evolving before my very eyes!" So, um, here's all that.

Under cuts, because you know how I ramble.

Sapphire and Steel

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place? David McCallum. I was squeeing about DMc and MFU on another board and somebody said "you have seen Sapphire & Steel, right?" And I said no. So they pointed me to this introductory picspam of awesome, and then I watched it. And it is at least as good as the picspam throughout, which takes some doing.

2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on? Eh, I always move on, to an extent, though I sometimes wander back. There are so many shiny things - and S&S is so small it could hardly be anyone's primary fandom. But I am eagerly waiting for [livejournal.com profile] illyushadarling to have a sane schedule again so she can get around to capping it!

3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc? If I have to pick one, it'd be Assignment 2. It has Steel in a white silk scarf and navy greatcoat, and Steel in a blue velvet jacket (why yes, I have a thing for well-built guys in tailored velvet jackets, don't you?), and Steel in an awesome bomber jacket and leather helmet, and Steel putting his jacket through a time warp and turning it into a fairisle jumper... is anyone seeing a theme yet? Also the writing is amazing, and the special effects are within their budget, which is the first time I've ever seen that happen on British telly! (I mean, 'scuse me for saying it that way, but I saw the BBC's Narnia movies as a toddler. There's a reason my sisters looked at S&S and asked "Why is the BBC supposed to be better, exactly?")

Besides, it has several completely gratuitous minutes of David McCallum marching up and down in his blue velvet jacket, flopping his swishy hair (I love Steel's hair) and singing a cappella perfectly on key while banging on a bucket. And grinning. I always love to watch good actors having fun.

4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)? I ficced once: just a drabble, a bit of character analysis inspired by an episode, contrasting Steel and Sapphire. I don't seem to have the timey-wimey brain for anything longer. Also I can't Art or I would totally draw chibi!Steel in his little velvet jacket, and there is no discussion comm.

5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom? Of course! A lot of people seem to know of it, but the amount of fannish squee has not yet reached critical mass and become self-sustaining. This needs to happen.

Man from UNCLE

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place? Uh, Werner Klemperer, actually. I knew there was an episode of some spy show that had Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner in it together, but when I heard that it had also had Werner Klemperer aka Colonel Klink (who is a most awesome actor), I basically went "OMGOSH I MUST SEE THIS". So I did - and promptly fell head-over-heels for the Russian. That is all.

2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on? Eh... I'm actually at the moving-on stage right now. I stay in the Canteen because there are not so many good sources of intellectual discussion in my life, and I've made enough friends around here that I'm not likely to drop the fandom completely and never wander back. But - yeah, other pastures at the moment. *koff koff*

3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc? Um... Strigas; Yo Ho Ho; Gurnius; the Japanese one with Cricket Okasada, of which I cannot remember the title; the one with Shari Lewis in it, because that was just hilarious. And has Illya talking deadpan nonsense, which is the best kind.

4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)? Do I ever! I think I've written more MFU fic than any other kind. It's of varying quality, of course, but it's there. I've also done LOLs and participated in many, many Canteen discussions.

5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom? I don't know, it's a good size. It depends how they come in, i.e. whether there is a new movie that mucks up the canon and creates opposing camps. I always squee about it to NCIS fans, as well as to anybody who sees Illya on my laptop wallpaper. (I have a rotating wallpaper display with - probably ALL my fandoms in it at this point. Except Legend. *sadface*)

Doctor Who

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place? Uh, I needed a scarf. No, seriously.

2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on? If I ever wind up in a place that has Classic Who DVDs at the library, I'm back like a shot. Otherwise - well, my canon knowledge is almost entirely cobbled together from spoilers and has to stand fairly still with its back to the wall so as not to show patches. And I have neither money for Netflix nor time to let YouTube-ish sites buffer.

3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc? Of what I've seen yet? Anything with the Brig, Harry, or Delgado!Master in. They make everything better. Three and Sarah Jane are spiffy too, though I have sadly not seen them together. Oh, and Rory. 'Scuse me, I did not say that right - RORY!!!!! ;-)

4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)? Yup! I write occasional drabbly Three!gen, am responsible for about 40% of the unclaimed offerings at [livejournal.com profile] dw_straybunnies, and leave squeeful comments all over the place. Also I thought Matt Smith would be awesome as soon as I saw his first interview - I am rather proud of that, I should have an icon. "Charter Member of the Give Matt Smith a Chance Club", possibly with "I told you so" underneath. lol

5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom? Yes: my family. They mock me for the rubber monsters (although my mother does call Three "the good-looking one", which shows taste. *g*) When I showed them Legend they said "well, it's better than Doctor Who anyway".

Everyone else seems to be in the fandom already.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place? It has John de Lancie in. *g* Also it is one of those things everybody has seen except me. And there is De Kelley in the pilot, although I agree with him that they should have skipped the age latex and just given him a distinguished mustache or something.

2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on? Good question. It's hard to say yet, I'm not far enough in... haven't even gotten started on the fic. But Riker is very cool, Patrick Stewart is an amazing actor although Picard can be something of an idiot, and Brent Spiner loves kids and has great hands - which is all to the good.

3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc? Well, I haven't really seen enough yet to say. "All Good Things..." was made of awesome and win throughout, especially in the second half, and "Q Who" is chock-full of prettyfulness. And "Peak Performance" and "A Matter of Honor", oh my word!!! Yup - babbling.

4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)? Not yet. It's a HUGE honkin' place, and I'm never comfortable in a fandom till I know enough about the canon to fake my way through fic. Plus I usually do better in small fandoms where I can get to know people and build up a bit of name recognition. *g*

5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom? It seems like everyone's already there, lol!

It would appear David McCallum is responsible for seismic shifts of fandoms all over the place :D
You will really like later seasons of STNG when Q returns as a much more mature character!
Love this meme, its so interesting to see why people migrate.

"Uh, Werner Klemperer, actually."

Proving once again that W.K. is the man :D Although, TBH, I don't have much interest in his non-HH roles...
