Beta?

Er. Anyone interested in beta-reading 1585 words of Sam/Bra'tac friendship fic (SG-1, obvs) on a prompt of "gender roles"? There is staff weapon fighting, knitting, and motorcycling involved. I'm mainly concerned about pacing, clarity of the action scenes, and characterization. (Canon continuity isn't a huge issue, as it's, um... missing-scene fic for a nonexistent episode. Er, yeah. o_O It's somewhere in S4/S5...)

The way I usually do this is to put the fic up as an entry in a filtered locked post, so only the beta and I can see it, and have the beta comment. If a potential beta would rather I e-mailed the Word doc, I can do that too - just let me know which.

On a related note, I do not seem able to write SG-1 fic that has not got knitting in it, except for that one Siler drabble. This fact amuses me. *g*

I know I don't have a whole lot of 'Gate writers on my flist/dwircle (good grief that's a weird word), but I'm mentioning this anyway:

LJ's sg1friendathon i.e. the Stargate SG-1 Friendship Genficathon (whew *g*) now has 172 prompts up for claiming in their prompt post right here.

Prompts are first-come-first-served, and they're going fairly fast (I snaffled "Sam/Bra'tac friendship, gender roles", which ought to be interesting at least); stories are due August 1, word minimum is 1000. C'mon in, the water's fine! ;-)

...yes, I signed up for a ficathon with a thousand-word minimum. Me, who didn't even hit my 300-word goal for Clocket's help_haiti piece. O_O I guess winning MaNo has pickled my brain a bit. ;-)

*needs to do a Bra'tac watchathon* *although it's really Sam who's kicking my tail atm*

(Yes, I am working on everything else I need to be working on too! *pets flist* lol)

Okay, so I was poking InfiniteViking's back archives (as I do - some of my longtime friends know that I tend to marathon interesting people's journal archives when I'm bored, and scatter comments along my way), and I found a "List 100 awesome female characters" meme.

This leads me to realize that I don't even know if I could come up with 25 or 50 awesome female characters, let alone 100. I pay far too little attention to the ladies - heck, the TARDIS is the only female character in my icons right now! O_O Except for her, my favorite characters from my various fandoms fit quite well under the heading of "my guys".

So. For an experiment: rockin' awesome female characters in no particular order. Good, evil, human, alien, inorganic... let's see how many I can come up with!

Hopefully this will be long )

Well! That was educational! It seems that many things I like actually have quite a high concentration of awesome ladies - I just don't primarily focus on them. Granted, most of them are in pretty minor roles. o_O

(Feel free to suggest female characters I missed in the comments! Admittedly, there are some I left out on purpose, but there are also many many many that I just haven't seen yet or plain forgot about. *g*)
Okay, here goes. I'm not going to say much in defence of this, except it was written a while back when I was depressed and (as usual) I don't really know if it's much good.

Title: To Rust Unburnished
Summary: Stargate SG-1, Tin Man ep tag. Robo!Jack muses on what he's lost.
Notes: Gen, rated PG for Jackish language. 50 words. Title from Tennyson's Ulysses, which is An Awesome Poem.

How dull is it to pause, to make an end, to rust unburnished, not to shine in use! As though to breathe were life! )
I just thought I'd randomly mention that (having discovered the 24/7 computer lab with super-fast wireless access on my campus, yay college) I am starting a Stargate SG-1 Watch-Through of EPIC. I'd do reaction posts, except the sum total of my original thoughts about COTG part 1 - i.e. the thoughts that aren't "oh Jack, oh Sam, oh Daniel, Hammond in a hat!" - are that Kawalsky is pretty darn cute (too bad spoilers! )) and Teal'c looks silly in serpent guard armor. Probably everybody looks silly in serpent guard armor.

Oh, and Apophis really does look oddly like President Obama. I wasn't watching 'Gate during the election lead-up, so I missed out on most of the Apophis-vs-Janet politics-related hilarity on one of my forums then... (fora? flora? foraminifera? lol)

Also Apophis wears silver lame under his armor instead of the Jaffa's knitted longjohns. This can be interpreted to support my fanon that Jaffa knit their own armor-liner-whatever-those-are in their spare time.

(Yes, I am slightly cracked-out right now. All my homework is caught up, and there is ALL OF STARGATE SG-1 on Hulu. :DDDD Got algebra class in a bit, though. Hurrah, more homework! *g*)
I say.

My Jack voice is back.

This does not necessarily mean fic - all hail the world-conquering geology lab homework (why yes it's late, and I have been reading [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose's archives, which tend to make me cracked-out) - but my Jack voice is back. After about five episodes. Do you know how long it is since I got to watch this show?!

*bouncy*
So I ganked this from [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose, who made it up a few years back. I'm reading through her archives, because I'm bored and apparently Whovians all have fascinating LJ archives. ;-)

Multi-Fandom Fanfiction Meme (You had me at "multi-fandom". *g*)

The instructions )

WELL! That was interesting... I find that I can't write a Sapphire & Steel half-drabble on a Robert W. Service prompt. It just won't. But here are the other four. I am deliberately not thinking about whether they are any good; half-drabbles aren't long enough for me to form a complete thought anyway.

Doctor Who )

Legend )

Man from UNCLE )

Stargate SG-1 )
In all the vast wilderness of Stargate/NCIS crossover fic, there is one very important meeting that I cannot discover has ever been written - and believe me, I've been looking!

I would so much rather somebody else, a better writer than me, had written this little piece; I simply don't think I can do justice to the amount of awesome inherent in the concept. (And I strongly suspect my characterization is off - haven't actually watched any 'Gate in way too long.) I have neither a continuation nor a prequel in mind... just an incident that wanted to be written.

Title: Medical Convergency
Summary: Ducky goes to Colorado Springs to meet an old friend.
Notes: Gen, 370-some words (word counter tools are a pain, and so is my memory).

Chevron 7 locked... )
So I ran across this meme today: When you see this, post five unpopular fandom opinions in your journal. Eh, why not? I seem to have a knack for holding unpopular opinions anyway.
  1. Doctor Who (modern): David Tennant is, well, not cute. I could put it more strongly than that, but I already have a nice collection of flames for my next bonfire... ;-)
  2. Man from UNCLE: I like quite a lot of third season. (Though it does explain why UNCLE crackfic isn't particularly common: in this fandom, the crack is canon!)
  3. Doctor Who (classic): Tom Baker is SCARY. The hair! The teeth! The EYES! (Great actor, though - one of very few I'd watch in practically anything, just to see him work. Along with RDA, Fred MacMurray, Angela Lansbury, and possibly Werner Klemperer.)
  4. Stargate SG-1: I don't see anything slashy in the "Spacemonkey!" scene. Seriously.
  5. MacGyver: Mac has it unfairly easy because, in his world, all the nuts and screws fit the holes he wants them to go into. Whereas, in my world, they never do. *grumps*
