Looking back, looking forward...

I did a lot of unexpected things in 2010. Such as flying to California for a week all by myself to visit a college (which involved falling asleep in a music class, surviving a bus-tire blowout at 70mph on the Pacific Coast Highway, riding in my first taxi, and trying to catnap on a bench in the Indianapolis airport at five in the morning while temporarily deaf in one ear). And hand-coding a list of over 2000 fanfic offers for [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti. And starting college - well, that wasn't completely unexpected, but majoring in geology was. So were moving out of my parents' house, getting a job, and getting a 3.84 GPA for my first semester despite not turning in two out of six English papers! O_O

I tend not to do terribly specific New Year's resolutions: last year's, if you remember, was "try to worry less about fitting in". This year, as I dig through the piles of disorganized whatnot in my new room (much of which is either memorabilia or stuff for which I might someday have a use), I think I'll go for "try to find a proper balance of living in the past, present, and future". Along with the standard annual resolution to aim for lower stress, more joy, and making the world better. :D

Happy New Year, all! *hugs flist*
Not that I post that often anyway... but I'm so zonked I'm taking the rest of the year off from existence, except for Christmas morning. Just making it a bit official. ;-) I have hot chocolate, blankets, and a two-foot-tall stack of Terry Pratchett novels from the library (though sadly I forgot to raid the Andre Norton shelves while I was at it), so that's all good.

Beth - good luck settling in. Oh, and thanks again for the icons. *g* Clocket - your story needs another rewrite, and my laptop's in the shop, but if at all possible you should have help_haiti fic in your fandom_stocking on Epiphany. Prim, and all the other people whose birthdays I am apparently missing - happy birthday!

And a meme.

In 2011, curuchamion resolves to...

I has a fandom_stocking! Which I am now linking so people can put things in it if they want. Also if you have a stocking, please comment on this post to let me know! (Although I'll be going through the comm posts too, there are so many of them I could easily miss yours.)
...Can I get a quick beta for a 600-word Doctor Who (UNIT)/X-Men crossover? You don't need to know either fandom; I just want to find out if it's as dire in its current condition as I think it is.

Thanks, anybody that takes me up on this...
[livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking's 2010 stocking post is up!

If you missed my earlier post about this, the linked post and the comm info explain most of it. One point that's not made as clear as I'd like is that the whole thing is completely without obligation - you can sign up for a stocking even if you have no time to put anything (even random good wishes) in anyone else's stocking. So there are no excuses! ;-)

The point of all which is: pull together a list of your fannish likes and dislikes (if you've been at all touched by the Yuletide insanity, I suspect you have one of these), go over to fandom_stocking and post it! Then, once stockings are posted, you can either go through and put things in everyone else's... or not. And just sit back and wait for Old Christmas Day to roll around!
This is a bit of a random PSA: [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking is getting ready to go again!

I expect there are people on my flist who haven't heard of this comm - I hadn't, till [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose started nattering about it last year - so here are the basics:

long post can be shortened a bit... )

TL;DR: make list of fannish likes and dislikes, put list in appropriate place, get pile of lovely happy-making comments on January 6. How awesome is that?

One thing I'd like to clarify, by way of encouraging y'all to sign up for stockings: this DOES NOT HAVE to be reciprocal. You are not required to leave anything in anyone else's stocking just because you signed up to have a stocking. Of course, we're all nice people who would like to scatter happiness around us ;-) but it's not something you have to stress over, "Eek, do I have the time to commit to this?" You can do as little or as much as you have time for.

So, anyway. Go take a look at the comm ([livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, I link it again) and start getting your fandom lists ready. *mock-stern face* I want an flist full of "Oh btw here is my fandom_stocking link!" come December! ;-)

***************

In other news, I am having way too much fun with my new Q icons, now that I finally got around to uploading some of them. Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] lolmac Beth!
Ah, what the hey. Influential authors meme!

'Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen authors (poets [and comic book authors] included)* who've influenced you and that will always stick with you. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes. Tag everyone, because I'm interested in seeing what authors my friends choose.'

In no order at all:

1. Chris Claremont (hey, when they said "comic book authors"...)
2. JRR Tolkien
3. Laura Ingalls Wilder
4. Eve Titus (of the "Basil of Baker Street" series)
5. Elizabeth Enright ("Gone-Away Lake" and "The Saturdays")
6. Shakespeare (really)
7. Rudyard Kipling
8. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
9. C.S. Lewis (I'm not fond of him, but he did influence me quite a bit)
10. G.K. Chesterton
11. Robert Arthur ("Three Investigators" series)
12. Arthur Ransome ("Swallows and Amazons" series)
13. Adam-Troy Castro
14. Timothy Zahn
15. Kate Seredy

Yuletide

Nov. 9th, 2010 03:43 pm
Dear self,

No, you most emphatically may not sign up for Yuletide. You're a drabble/ficlet writer. It is quite unlikely that you could produce 1000 words of publishable fic in a minor fandom within 1 month, let alone having it all be the same story (or anything coherently resembling a Five Times fic, either).

Besides, you've been through last year's prompt list; you know most of the requests will be for things that make you reach for the brain-bleach. Even if you could write Wraith Squadron fic or Tommy & Tuppence fic or any of these other things in the abstract, the prompts would stop you dead. And Legend isn't on the list this year.

(Besides, aren't you working on a belated NYR fic for one of last year's prompts?)

Cordially,
The sensible one
Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook.

1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Do they succeed?", "Under what circumstances might five and fourteen fall in love?", "Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?"

3) After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.

The last time I did this it turned out wonderfully cracktastic, so perhaps it will do so again.
I just thought I'd randomly mention that (having discovered the 24/7 computer lab with super-fast wireless access on my campus, yay college) I am starting a Stargate SG-1 Watch-Through of EPIC. I'd do reaction posts, except the sum total of my original thoughts about COTG part 1 - i.e. the thoughts that aren't "oh Jack, oh Sam, oh Daniel, Hammond in a hat!" - are that Kawalsky is pretty darn cute (too bad spoilers! )) and Teal'c looks silly in serpent guard armor. Probably everybody looks silly in serpent guard armor.

Oh, and Apophis really does look oddly like President Obama. I wasn't watching 'Gate during the election lead-up, so I missed out on most of the Apophis-vs-Janet politics-related hilarity on one of my forums then... (fora? flora? foraminifera? lol)

Also Apophis wears silver lame under his armor instead of the Jaffa's knitted longjohns. This can be interpreted to support my fanon that Jaffa knit their own armor-liner-whatever-those-are in their spare time.

(Yes, I am slightly cracked-out right now. All my homework is caught up, and there is ALL OF STARGATE SG-1 on Hulu. :DDDD Got algebra class in a bit, though. Hurrah, more homework! *g*)
From [personal profile] primsong. Comment with BLUE SNOOD and I'll give you five questions to satisfy my curiosity. Go post the answers on your journal with these instructions and spread the madness!

under the cut )
I say.

My Jack voice is back.

This does not necessarily mean fic - all hail the world-conquering geology lab homework (why yes it's late, and I have been reading [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose's archives, which tend to make me cracked-out) - but my Jack voice is back. After about five episodes. Do you know how long it is since I got to watch this show?!

*bouncy*
I say, can anyone (on Dth or LJ) tell me how to view a journal style sheet - the bit that actually has pre-written code on it, not just the "write your own bits of code here" slot? I have to learn CSS for work, and while the training videos are informational, I won't really understand it without a playspace to poke around in and a properly written style to take apart.

Pointing me to FAQs about "how to do this specific thing in CSS" would also be helpful. Thanks, anybody!
Courtesy of a co-worker: my cell phone is not set on vibrate. It is set on stun. :D

That is all.

Fandom meme

Oct. 3rd, 2010 11:10 am
Okay - [livejournal.com profile] togsos was doing this meme and I (being - like her - a "sleek fabulous lemming", lol) jumped on the bandwagon.

Rules: Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Togsos asked me about Sapphire and Steel, MFU, and Doctor Who, then added "but I would like a bonus set of the same answers on Star Trek next gen because it is a slide into fandom that is happening/evolving before my very eyes!" So, um, here's all that.

Under cuts, because you know how I ramble.

S&S under here ) MFU under here ) Who under here ) TNG under here )
Okay, having 94 icons uploaded to Dth, I'm finally going to do the icon meme! Only, because the usual form depends on user interaction to get the squee started, I'm modifying it.

I have posted here six of my icons that I think are awesome. (Not my favorites, because I have more than six of those.) Tell me in the comments which of my icons YOU think are coolest... or, you know, just chatter. I will reply to your comment and tell you which of your icons I like best (possibly also asking if they are gankable), and then you can if you want repost this in your journal with my choices or your own, and make more icon squee! Please?

Spinning... so much cooler than not spinning

The Noun of Rassilon!

Night Watch (paperback cover)

scrolling animated SG-1 icon

I do not trust any advice which is given in bad prose

Scotty says "I canna change the laws of physics more than once an episode!"

I say - anyone on my flist who doesn't already know this: [livejournal.com profile] fic_rush is going splendidly. Come over to [livejournal.com profile] fic_rush_48 and write with us! (Or just distract us with random chatter. That's what the hourly posts are actually for, after all... *g*)
Okay, so various people on my flist have been applying the Pirate Translator to their fanfic in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day. It's actually tomorrow here by now, but... eh, why not.

The pirate-ized version of One More Time is under the cut.

Here it is... )

I'm also testing out LJ crossposting here. (I do find it vastly amusing that in fleeing crossposting from LJ we have all wound up crossposting to it. *g*)
(Yes, Prim, I am totally going to call you out in front of my flist. *hugs you*)

So [livejournal.com profile] primsong has randomly gone and bought me a paid Dreamwidth account. For six months. Which... I wasn't planning to really move, I have everything the way I like it here, and my friends are not there and Dth color-schemes are dreary - but how can I not go all commenty on a site where I have space for 100 ICONS?

So I rounded up all the icons I had handy that I really, really love, and some of the ones I'll probably get bored of pretty quick now I can actually use them. And I have, um, thirty-four. (This is not counting the ones of my LOLs that I haven't iconified yet, and the ones I'd been meaning to gank that I haven't remembered/found again yet, and the ones I will inevitably want from that "DreamSheep" comm - but still. Thirty-four.)

So I am putting out a general call: who on my flist has gankable icons? Where are the icon comms and icon makers in my fandoms? (I've never had occasion to look. And by "my fandoms" I mean anything I've squeed or rambled about even once.) Or just awesome non-fannish icons are good too. Point me to sources, people!

(Also if anyone knows of some good Q icons I will love you forever. Have I yet mentioned my current obsession with John de Lancie that was masquerading as "research" for Legend!fic until my sister decided to call me on checking out suspiciously random eps of Murder She Wrote and Touched By An Angel? lol)
I have a paper due on Friday.

I appear to write better nonfiction when I am taking fiction breaks when I get stuck.

I seem to be completely blocked on all my current plot bunnies.

Thus... ficlet project! :D

If you have no idea what that is - it's been going round my flist recently. Basically: First person to comment on this post gets to request a ficlet. One fandom, one or two characters and a prompt, on the understanding that I may do anything I like in the way of ignoring said characters/prompts as long as I stay within the fandom. I write said ficlet, post it, and the first person to comment on that post may then request a ficlet. (If you've already had one, please step back and let others have their turn.)

The idea is, it's a way to get myself writing in small spurts and start clearing the channel, so to speak. Quality not guaranteed, but I will try to post a ficlet every day or two, for as long as I want to go on. I'll try to warn when I'm starting to run down.

Fandoms: Doctor Who (Three, Four, Nine, or Eleven eras); Man from UNCLE; MacGate (you take what you get); Legend; X-Men (Wolverine-centric only); Star Trek TOS (I'm a Bones girl primarily, but willing to try to write any main character, as long as you don't care what I do to them). No ship, no slash, and I disclaim responsibility for possible probable crack, angst, or meta.

Let the good times roll! ;-)
